Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the gladiator fights that apparently preceded it. Hit the jump to check out my review…
Official Synopsis: A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him.
Review Summary: The start of 2014 feels overly congested with sword and sandal epics, bloated with unconvincing CGI and wooden acting. Pompeii continues this trend, but also commits the fatal act of being inconceivably dull. A film like this relies heavily on the special effects working, and they just don’t. So the one aspect of this movie that could give cause for casual enjoyment doesn’t even deliver. It feels like an amalgamation of many other movies, and one that doesn’t even live up to them. Hammy performances, poor editing, straight-to-DVD special effects, and bland direction.
