Southpaw – Movie Review

Official Synopsis: Boxer Billy Hope turns to trainer Tick Willis to help him get his life back on track.

Review Summary: Jake Gyllenhaal continues his streak of brilliant performances the Academy will likely ignore. Southpaw is an entertaining blend of virtually every boxing movie you’ve ever seen. While this at times works negatively for the film, the cliches of the genre are always outweighed by the terrific acting and visceral direction. Antoine Fuqua’s use of a POV first-person style in the ring really makes you feel the full force of these brutal battles. Southpaw is emotionally effective outside the ring and thrilling while inside it.
